The photographer whose portrait I emulated is Irving Penn. Penn was born in Plainfield N.J. and died in New York N.Y. on October 7, 2009. He established himself as a fashion photographer after photographing ideas for magazine covers. Penn started photographing for Vogue magazine. This photographer's main subjects are celebrities, the average everyday person, and he also photographs some interesting still lives.
I was inspired by the black and white photo of Robert DeNiro because this photo truly captures emotion in DeNiro's face. I emulated this photo by putting a black sweater on the subject and trying to capture the same striking look in his eyes. I also changed the photo from color to black and white and changed the contrast levels. I focused the lighting to be angled on the left side of his face.
I was inspired by the still life of the books and the apple because there is an element of mystery in the photo. This photo left me asking about who the books and apple belonged too and how long the items have been there. I questioned the length of time they have been there because the books look older and have developed some character. I emulated this photo by getting three books around the same size as the original photo and finding an apple around the same size. I also changed the photo to black and white and washed out the apple to get the same effect as the original photo. I focused the lighting from the back and on the apple.
